Things to do and see around Melrose

Situated in the centre of the South of Scotland, Melrose is the ideal base from which to explore this beautiful part of the country. Whether your interests are cultural, sporting or leisure the Scottish Borders has something to offer. From the grand castles and stately homes to ancient border keeps (towers) they are all within 20 minutes drive from Kirklands. Ranging from the grandeur of Floors Castle near Kelso, to Thirlestane by Lauder or, Scotland's oldest inhabited house at Traquair, they are all waiting to be explored. Mellerstain, Manderston and Paxton are three of many stately homes open to the public, all easily reached from Kirklands, with Smailholm Tower, a superb example of a Border's Keep a mere ten minutes away.

Horse Riding is available locally

For those interested in sport The Scottish Borders has a wealth of choice. Whether you are interested in golf or tennis, fishing or horse riding they are all available locally. The area boasts a number of internationally renowned events - Melrose is the home of Rugby Sevens (Founded 1883) which are held annually in April, Lauder hosts The Scottish Championship Horse Trials in August, The Jim Clark rally is held around Duns whilst Kelso is home to The Border Union Agricultural Show each July. With less than an hours drive to the coast, Coldingham, Eyemouth and Berwick are within easy reach of Melrose and Edinburgh is about 50 minutes north, by car.

Other pastimes, that may be of interest to some such as eating and shopping, are more than well provided for with a wealth of shops and restaurants in the town catering for most requirements!
